Thursday: 11AM-1PM lunch; 3:15-5:30PM coffee & pastries.

GPL Black History Month!

When: Thursdays, February 2018

Where: GPL Lena Martin Room (excluding Soul Food Contest) 

Every February, Black History Month is observed to celebrate the contributions African-Americans have made to the United States, both its history and its culture. The Gadsden Public Library is again proud to recognize those contributions with its 2018 series to celebrate Black History Month. We invite children, teens, adults and families of all races to this month-long series. This series is FREE to the public, excluding a two dollar donation to sample entries from the Soul Food Contest!

Quilt Talk: Secret Slave Codes in Quilts

When: February 15, 5-6:30PM

Where: GPL Lena Martin Room 

Guest lecturer Chari Bostick will speak on the tradition of secret messages stitched into quilts along the Underground Railroad. 

Chari Bostick is the founder and executive director of the Grace Heritage Foundation for Southern Hills Cemetery. Ms. Bostick frequently lectures on the history of Southern Hills Cemetery, discussing future projects associated with her continued effort to restore and preserve the forgotten cemetery.

Soul Food Contest

When: February 22, 5-6:30PM

Where: Beautiful Rainbow Café 

If you can throw down on some “soul food,” then this contest is for you! Categories: Meats, vegetables, desserts, and breads. 

No pre-made foods may be used in dishes prepared for the contest. Deadline to enter contest is Wednesday, February 21, 2018, before 4PM. Entry forms available at all branches.

From Our Kitchen: Heart Healthy Recipes Cooking Demo & Author Event at the GPL!

When: February 13, 5:30-6:30

Where: Beautiful Rainbow Café 

In this promotion of their cookbook From Our Kitchen: Heart Healthy Recipes, Fran and Al Andrepont will be demonstrating how to cook up their “Prize Winning Chocolate Nut Torte!” This is a healthy pre-Valentine’s Day treat that you do not want to miss! 

Copies of From Our Kitchen: Heart Healthy Recipes will be available for purchase and for signing following the demonstration.

GPL Computer Classes

Where: Computer Classroom (2nd Floor) of the Main Library 

Cost: Classes are offered free-of-charge to the community! However, there is a $5.00 deposit (per class) to hold your reservation. Your deposit will be returned to you the day of the class. PLEASE NOTE: Registration is required since space is limited to 12 people per class. Register for classes in person at the Computer Center Desk (2nd floor) or for more information, call 256.549.4699, ext. 2119. A current (free & clear) library card is needed to enroll. If you don’t have a card, you may obtain one at the Circulation Desk, 1st floor of the Main Library. 

Computer Basics for Beginners

When: February 6 & 7, 9:30AM-12:30PM

This is a two-day class (3 hours per day) for the absolute beginner or for those who simply need to know more about computers. No computer experience is required.
