[ARCHIVED] May First Friday

student exhibition image

On Friday May 3rd from 5pm to 7pm the Gadsden Museum of Art will be hosting a reception for our Annual School Exhibition, Creative Spirit: new work by Steve Loucks and Lynnette Hesser, Current(s) by Robert Hendrickson, and work from Hokes Bluff Middle School Student Nigel Dean.

The School Exhibition features over 400 pieces from city and county schools, along with private and home schooled students. The art includes drawings, paintings, photographs, ceramics, and more from children aged 3 years old to 18 years old.

On display in the Leo Reynolds Gallery is Creative Spirit: new work by Lynnette Hesser and Steve Loucks. Hesser’s work celebrates geometric patterns, flowers, and natural forms. Loucks work transcends function while embracing it. His ceramics are divided between utilitarian pottery and glorified decorative vessels.

Opening on the second floor gallery is Robert B. Hendrickson’s Current(s). Current(s) is a group of seemingly disparate works of art which actually converge conceptually. The title, Current(s), makes reference to works that have not only been recently produced, but also references works that center around the idea of an exchange of energy. Within various works, these types of energy differ and the way in which those energies flow can change. The collected works in this show span more than a decade of studio practice. While most of the pieces are recent, bringing these works together highlights a concept that has been a consistent studio presence for an extended period of time; an exchange of energy between two bodies. Whether those bodies are celestial, astronomical, terrestrial, or even abstracted; there is an ever-present current of energy between us and everything around us (near or far) which never ceases.

15 year old artist Nigel Dean from Hokes Bluff Middle School will be showing a collection of her drawings. Nigel is self taught and illustrates from her imagination.

Refreshments will be served
