[ARCHIVED] Public-Private Partnership to Restore and Preserve Historic East Gadsden Fire Station

East Gadsden Fire Station Building

Gadsden, AL - After an exhaustive search for proposals for renovation and rehabilitation of the historic East Gadsden Fire Station, the City of Gadsden has approved a plan to transfer ownership of the structure in order to renovate and preserve the building. The station, designed by architect Paul W. Hofferbert, is located at 107 S. Eighth St. behind the Etowah County Health Department and while historic, has not been suitable for use as a fire station for several decades. Since its retirement from service, the station has supported a variety of uses including housing narcotics operations for the Gadsden Police Department.

The City of Gadsden has accepted Gadsden native Steve Lambert's proposal to do whatever is necessary to completely renovate the building, that dates back to 1929.  “Having lived in East Gadsden for a good number of years, I have a special place in my heart for old buildings like the fire station.  I want to do whatever I can to help revitalize this community.”  The City is excited to enter into this public-private partnership to save an East Gadsden landmark without spending taxpayer dollars. Mr. Lambert will undertake the necessary work to have the building added to the Historic Register and comply with historic preservation guidelines.

Although plans for programming and other activities to be housed at the building are still being developed, the City of Gadsden is proud to partner with Mr. Lambert to come back and invest in the neighborhood where he grew up and launch a unique redevelopment in East Gadsden.
