[ARCHIVED] March First Friday at Gadsden Museum of Art

unspecified.jpg
On First Friday, March 3rd the Gadsden Museum of Art will have a closing reception for its three current exhibits: Relics by Anita Stewart and Amanda Ann Palmer, A Tale of Six Counties by Pamela A. Canzater, and Methods: Traditional to Digital by PaperWorkers Local.

Relics features contemporary sculpture from artists Anita Stewart and Amanda Ann Palmer.

Anita Stewart’s works come about through collecting items in nature and creating assimilates based on her Catholic upbringing. The items assembled are called “relics” and are likened to the soul, as the encasing “reliquaries” are representative of the body.

Amanda Ann Palmer’s featured works are four sculptures which represent her sense memories about being outdoors in Alabama. The textures in her sculptures “pay homage to a child’s curiosity” and are a visual representation of the diverse makeup of the forest.

In celebration of Black History Month, the works of Pamela A. Canzater are on display in the Leo Reynolds gallery. Her exhibit, “A Tale of Six Counties; How One Black Family Nurtured Their Southern/Northern Daughter,” is a biographical walk through her life of being an African-American woman raised in six different counties from Alabama to New York.

The PaperWorkers Local exhibit features original fine art prints and works of art on paper from regional artists. Among the featured works are photographs, printmaking, paintings, and drawings. PWL is a non-profit visual arts organization.

Don’t miss out on the last week of these great shows. Exhibits are free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be served. Girl Scout Troop #822 will be outside selling cookies in front of the Museum. For more information, contact museum staff at (256) 546-7365.
